Not sure whether rock or mulch is right for a bed? Honest answer: rock wins on longevity and zero upkeep; mulch wins on plant health and upfront cost. We install both and will tell you straight which suits each area of your yard; sometimes the answer is rock along the house and mulch in the planting beds.
Rock is a one-time cost. Mulch needs topping up every year or two as it breaks down; rock you buy once and it's still there, still clean, a decade later. Over five years, most rock beds cost less than the mulch beds they replaced.
It's also Calgary-proof: chinook winds don't blow it away, spring melt doesn't float it into the lawn, and it looks identical in month sixty as in month one. For windy corner lots and boulevard-facing beds, rock is often the only finish that stays put.
